I’m Still Here!

Okay, so the weekly thing didn’t pan out exactly, huh?

Turns out, when I’m learning from scratch, a few weeks in a row of saying the same thing doesn’t quite cut it. Nor does empty weeks worth of progress where I don’t really do anything. Instead, it was easier for me to let it slip.

But during the last two months of not posting, I’ve lost valuable insight into the little wins and challenges along the way. Sure, in the grand scheme those two months aren’t the end of the world, but on the tail end it doesn’t seem great.

I might go back to something more structured when I get going a little more consistently, but I might just leave things more ad-hoc. “We’ll see” – as the parents might say.

So what did you do in the last couple of months?

Well, I haven’t done nothing since my last post in April, you’ll I’ll be pleased to hear. I’ve read books about games and design, watched plenty of videos, and started following through gamedev.tv’s unity 3D course – which I do believe to be helpful.

I pushed out my version of Rocket Boost, which served as the second project on the course. I might still make a couple of tweaks to that project (like making the left/right thrusters fall off on collision), but if not, it stands on its own. Not a three hour thrilling experience, but a short bit of fun (plus, I could argue it technically means I’ve released a game)

I’m around halfway through the final project on this course, which so far has gone over the concepts of the new input system, terrain, animation and a handful of coding exercises I consider myself lucky enough to play at 3x speed.

On the side, I’ve also been building out a fun little floating island scene. While I wouldn’t go as far to call this a game (though I’ve had many ideas of how to turn it into one) – it serves as more of a tech demo. I recently purchased some Synty asset packs and started butchering that to my requirements.

What I’ll end up doing with this, I don’t know yet. For now, it can just be a playground of mechanics I’m interested in messing around with.
